Biblical Principles
for the Ballot Box
Because Vision Forum Ministries does not endorse individual candidates, it is our goal to help our readers to develop a distinctively biblical worldview from which they can form their own opinions. Our concern is not for whom you vote, as much as it is that you are faithful to God’s Word in your approach to voting. A vote is an ethical act for which the individual will be held accountable by his God.

- Sen. John McCain’s Record on Life RevisitedNovember 3, 2008
- Sen. Barack Obama’s ardent support of abortion is evil. Yet Sen. John McCain’s less active support of abortion is evil as well. In this article, we further explore Sen. McCain’s compromises on the sanctity of human life in view of LifeNews.com’s response to our previous post. After bringing to light additional facts of the Arizona senator’s checkered record that Steve Ertelt has sought to minimize or avoid, we conclude by explaining why the lesser-of-two-evils argument that is being invoked as a justification to support Sen. McCain falls short of God’s requirements for choosing civil magistrates. Read More
- Sanctity of Life Voter GuideOctober 30, 2008
- Are the 2008 presidential candidates willing to appoint pro-abortion judges to the Supreme Court? Are they willing to support federal funding for Planned Parenthood? What about Roe v. Wade? Are they willing to take active steps to overturn this heinous decision — or do they fear that such a move would “endanger” the lives of women? As an organization that cherishes the sanctity of human life, VFM has put together a Sanctity of Life Voter Guide that answers these and other critical questions. Read More
- Sen. John McCain’s Position on AbortionOctober 27, 2008
- With the 2008 presidential election just one week away, it is time that Sen. John McCain’s record on abortion be clearly explained. Based on the Arizona senator’s past record and statements on the life issue, he will not actively seek to overturn Roe v. Wade; will appoint pro-abortion judges, if he deems them otherwise qualified; will continue to support embryonic stem cell research; and will seek to undermine the Republican Party Platform’s pro-life plank which opposes abortion in the cases of rape, incest, and the life of the mother. - But What About Deborah?by William Einwechter, October 2, 2008
- Does the example of Deborah establish the biblical propriety of female civil magistrates? More particularly, does it provide Christians with a biblical justification to support Mrs. Sarah Palin in her bid for the Vice Presidency? In the search for biblical answers on the question of women in civil leadership, all roads seem to lead to Deborah. Using sound principles of hermeneutics and exegetical analysis, Pastor William Einwechter refutes many of the common misconceptions derived from this example, demonstrating that Deborah’s testimony does not establish the biblical validity of female civil rulers. - LA Times Highlights Concerns Over Biblical Problems with Palin Nominationby Douglas W. Phillips, Esq., October 1, 2008
- The Los Angeles Times recently interviewed Doug Phillips, Dr. Voddie Baucham, Dr. Richard Land, and others concerning the division within the Evangelical community on the propriety of a mother of young children potentially serving as Chief Executive of the United States and Commander In Chief in view of Mrs. Sarah Palin’s nomination to the Vice Presidency. - VFM Responds to CBMW Compromise: Part Iby Douglas W. Phillips, Esq., September 25, 2008
- In responding to questions posed by USA Today, the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood — in defending Gov. Palin’s bid for the vice presidency — has utilized theological arguments in direct contradiction to positions they maintained in the past concerning a woman’s role according to Scripture. This move on their part threatens to altogether destroy their view of complementarianism in the family and the church. In Part 1 of a series, Doug Phillips addresses several contradictions that CBMW has advanced. Read More
- The Miraculous Sanctification of the Republican Partyby Geoffrey Botkin, September 24, 2008
- Evangelicals are betraying their principles and their theology for the false confidence that a sanctified Republican Party will make an unholy nation sound again. This confidence is the cheap idolatry of escapist fantasy which is aptly represented in the popular “Miracle” poster of Gov. Sarah Palin. In one simple image, Mrs. Palin is portrayed as movie celebrity, sports hero, political sophisticate, cute feminist favorite, and the very channel of the power of God. Will Evangelicals come to realize the extent of this careless betrayal? Now, there would be a miracle. Read More
- The Palin Predicament Resolvedby William Einwechter, September 23, 2008
- In a USA Today Op-Ed article, Professor David Gushee identified a contradiction of evangelical leaders who maintain that Sarah Palin is qualified to be the vice president of the United States, but is unqualified to lead her own household or lead in the church. But Mrs. Palin does not present a predicament to those who believe that God’s order for men and women applies to all spheres of life. In this helpful article, William Einwechter resolves the five questions that Gushee raised in his Op-Ed piece, using clear biblical principles. Read More
- Sarah Palin and the Complementarian Compromiseby William Einwechter, September 8, 2008
- Evangelical leaders such as Dr. Albert Mohler have praised John McCain for picking professing Christian Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate, maintaining that her bid for this executive office as a woman presents no problem to their complementarian views of the rightful roles of men and women. Yet they are playing a dangerous game: In rejecting the biblical arguments for male headship in the state, they are laying the ax to the root of their own doctrine of male headship in the church. Further, in defending the propriety of a mother of young children ruling over the nation, they have undermined the doctrine of male headship and women as keepers at home. Read More
- A Christian Perspective on Just Warby William Einwechter, October 12, 2004
- War by its very nature is a spectacle of violence, destruction, suffering, and death. War is filled with many horrors and is a great human tragedy. War tends to unleash the worst of human passions: hate, vengeance, wicked ambition, cruelty, base desires, and blood-lust. Erasmus was fond of the adage of Pindar: “Sweet is war to him who knows it not.” Or as those who do know war testify: “War is hell.” These things being true, how could a Christian ever be in favor of war? - Christ is Lord of (Almost) Allby Caleb Hayden, October 12, 2004
- A defining issue of our day is the Lordship of Christ over all areas of life. Most Christians would agree, at least to an extent, that Christ is Lord. After all, does not Scripture teach this? “And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Philippians 2:11, KJV). While it is fine for Christians to profess Christ as Lord in their individual lives, families, and churches, what of their political affiliations? Read More
- Our First Female Justice Argues That Babies May Be Killed So Women Can Work Outside the Homeby Douglas W. Phillips, Esq., July 8, 2004
- Twenty-three years ago today Ronald Reagan became the first president to place a woman on the United States Supreme Court bench. Liberals made it clear that they celebrated the appointment of a woman to the Court. With the exception of a few die-hards like my father Howard Phillips, most conservatives and Evangelical leaders remained utterly silent, willfully ignoring the fact that Mrs. O’Connor had a flagrant pro-abortion judicial record. - Should Christians Support a Woman for the Office of Civil Magistrate?by William Einwechter, July 8, 2004
- With more and more women entering the political sphere and running for political office, the conscientious, biblically oriented Christian is confronted with the question of whether or not he should give his support and vote to a woman. The following essay seeks to address the larger questions of the acceptability of women magistrates and the Christian’s responsibility before God in regard to supporting a woman for political office. - Biblical Standards for Choosing Civil Magistratesby William Einwechter, July 7, 2004
- In a true Christian nation, the biblical standards for choosing magistrates will be part of constitutional law. A nation that is in covenant with God through Christ will express this by means of a national confession of submission to God and His law, and by a religious test for office that is based on the biblical qualifications for civil rulers.
